About Water Color Sort

A darker, tighter cut of the same idea: fewer tubes on screen, less room to undo a bad pour.

How Water Color Sort differs from the main game

This is the same puzzle on a darker board and a tighter budget. Where the headline Water Sort gives you a sunset backdrop and room to breathe, Water Color Sort starts you with fewer tubes on screen and fewer spare slots, so a wasted pour costs more. The rules card it shows on the first level is worth reading even if you already know the game: it is the clearest statement of the one restriction the whole puzzle hangs on.

Mechanically nothing has changed. Tap a tube to pick it up, tap another to pour, and a pour only happens when the destination is empty or already topped with the same colour. What changes is the margin for error.

The rules card, in words

  • Pouring onto the same colour is allowed, and the whole run of matching colour on top moves at once.
  • Pouring onto an empty tube is always allowed.
  • Pouring onto a different colour is refused — the game does not let you make the mistake, it just does nothing.
  • The circular arrow at the bottom resets the level to its starting layout. It is free and there is no penalty for using it.

Why this version punishes you faster

With fewer tubes there is rarely more than one empty at a time, and an empty tube is the only place any colour can legally go. The habit that carries over from easier boards — pouring a single unit somewhere just to see the board move — is what kills a level here, because that single unit occupies the empty tube you needed and cannot be moved again until something matches it.

The practical rule: before every pour, ask whether it reduces the number of distinct colours sitting on top of tubes. If it does not, it is probably a wasted move.

Getting unstuck

A level is locked when every tube has a different colour on top and none of them is empty. There is no legal move from that position and no amount of thinking will produce one, so stop looking — undo back to the last point where two tops matched, or reset.

If you find yourself resetting the same level repeatedly, try solving it backwards: pick the colour with the fewest scattered pieces, work out which tube it has to end up in, and make every early move serve that.
