Merge The Numbers puts a tray of numbered tiles under a grid and tells you plainly what to do: drag and merge the same numbers. You pick a tile up and place it, and matching neighbours combine into their double.

That makes it a placement game rather than a sliding one. Unlike 2048, the rest of the board does not move when you act — which sounds easier and means every mistake is permanent.

Because nothing slides

• You choose exactly where each tile goes, so there is no excuse for a badly placed number. Plan before you drop.
• Build ascending runs — 2 next to 4 next to 8 — so that one merge triggers the next along the line.
• Keep the high numbers together in one corner. Split them across the board and neither half can grow.
• Leave the middle of the grid open as long as you can; it is the only place a long chain can form.

When the board fills

Look for a chain rather than a single merge. Dropping the right tile into a prepared run can clear five cells at once, and that is usually the only thing that rescues a crowded board.

If no chain exists, take the merge that opens the most space rather than the one that makes the biggest number.
