Solitaire Mahjong, not the four-player game

This is the tile-matching solitaire: a layout of stacked tiles, and you remove them in matching pairs. A tile can only be taken if it is free — nothing on top of it, and at least one of its left or right sides open.

It shares its tiles with the four-player game and nothing else. There are no opponents, no scoring hands, and no turn order.

Why layouts become unsolvable

Because you took the wrong pair. When four identical tiles are all free, taking any two of them is fine. When only two are free and the other two are buried under different stacks, taking the free pair can leave the buried two blocked by each other forever.

That is the whole skill of the game: not finding a match, but choosing which match to take.

How to play it properly

• Before taking a pair, look for the other two tiles of that kind. If they are buried, taking the free pair may be the move that loses the board.
• Clear from the top and the long edges first — those unlock the most tiles per removal.
• Prefer a match that frees something to a match that frees nothing, even if the second one is more obvious.
• Save four-of-a-kind sets that are all accessible; they are your safety net later.

Reading the layout

Spend the first thirty seconds looking rather than clicking. The tiles pinning the largest stacks are the ones worth planning around, and they are usually at the ends of the long rows.

If a shuffle or hint button exists, treat it as a last resort — it usually costs the run's score and it removes the part of the game that was interesting.
