Tetris without the falling

You are offered three shapes at a time and you place them anywhere on the grid. Fill a full row or a full column and it clears. When none of the three shapes fits anywhere, the game ends.

There is no timer and no gravity, which sounds easier than Tetris and is not. Nothing arrives to bail you out, so every piece you place is a decision you keep.

The rule that matters most

Never leave single-cell gaps. A one-wide hole can only be filled by a one-cell piece, and the game may not offer one for a dozen turns. Two adjacent gaps are almost as bad.

Place pieces flush against each other and against the edges, and keep the open space in one connected region rather than scattered pockets.

Planning three at a time

• Look at all three shapes before placing any of them. The order you place them in often decides whether the third one fits at all.
• Place the biggest and most awkward shape first — the three-by-three square and the long five — while there is still room for it.
• Keep a clear corridor across the board. It is where the awkward pieces go and it is what a full-row clear needs.
• Clearing a column is worth as much as clearing a row, and players consistently forget to look for it.

Why runs end

Almost always the same way: the board looks fine, has plenty of empty cells, and none of them are adjacent. Space is only useful if it is shaped like the pieces you will be given.

When the board starts fragmenting, stop trying to score and spend two or three turns tidying — placing pieces purely to reconnect open space.
