The merge board, on hexagons

Merge Mosaics takes the numbered merge board and lays it out as a honeycomb: hexagonal tiles carrying 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32, packed into a hex field, with min and max indicators and a scores panel to the side.

The change from squares to hexagons is not decoration. A hex tile touches six neighbours rather than four, so chains are longer, more common and much harder to see coming.

Thinking in six directions

• Before merging, count neighbours. A tile with four matching neighbours is worth far more than one with two, even if the two are bigger numbers.
• Lines run three ways on a hex grid. Scan all three; most missed chains are along the axis you were not looking at.
• The min/max indicators tell you which values are still in circulation. When the minimum rises, stop planning around small tiles.

Where boards go wrong

Merging the biggest available pair on sight. On a hex board that usually breaks up a cluster that was one tile away from a five-way chain.

Take the small merge that completes a group, and let the big numbers arrive on their own.
